We passed the one-year mark since the start of excavation work at the new Coquitlam Y in March. Fortunately, despite the pandemic’s challenges our construction crews have been able to continue working steadily and safely on your new Coquitlam Y.
In fact, an incredible amount of progress has been made since we updated you last winter. At that point in the project, the hole was excavated, and rebar work had started to build the underground parking lot and foundation.
Fast forward to now, and the progress is exciting! All four levels of underground parking and the first level of the ‘above-ground’ structure are in place. At the end of February, crews poured the base of the pool tank. The second floor is currently under construction and advancing according to schedule.
What’s next? Construction of the first, second and third floors will continue through this spring and summer, and the third-floor roof will be added by fall 2021. We’re committed to keeping our What Really Matters family informed on our progress. While there is still much work to be done, we are pleased the construction schedule continues to run smoothly, with no delays to-date, and we anticipate opening the Coquitlam YMCA to the public in Fall 2022.
Thank you to our many donors who have invested in the new Coquitlam YMCA. Thanks to you, more people will be able to rely on the Y to deliver vital programs to Tri-Cities residents, including fitness classes for seniors, mental wellness groups for teens, English language classes and social groups for Canadian newcomers, and affordable childcare for all kinds of families. Your investment in the What Really Matters Capital Campaign ensures that no matter what challenges our communities face, whether local or global, the YMCA of Greater Vancouver will be there to provide safe and adaptable spaces dedicated to health, connection, and community.
