Making Progress: Coquitlam Continues Building During COVID-19

Ariel view of Coquitlam YMCA building site

We were happy to see construction of the new Coquitlam YMCA begin in February 2020. And although we can’t come together to celebrate the official groundbreaking due to Covid-19, construction continues, full steam ahead. Given the major work will focus on excavation for the foreseeable future, there is little Covid-19 risk to the project at this time and workers are able to perform their work safely.

Opening this Centre of Community will not only bring critically needed social infrastructure to the Burquitlam neighbourhood, it will also create opportunities to impact the lives of children, youth, adults and families for generations to come across the Tri-Cities.

Now that we are in the recovery stages of COVID-19, we see that our YMCA Centres of Community live up to their name – they are centres that facilitate diverse, connected and resilient communities. Right now, they function as childcare centres for essential service workers, serve as calling offices to check in with our senior members, and offer the best backdrop for our online fitness content, keeping thousands of Canadians healthy, connected and engaged. And most importantly, when the time is right, they will once again be a safe, sanitized, space for people to get healthy, rebuild and make valuable connections – when they need it most.

We can’t wait to be there for the residents of the Tri-Cities!

We will keep you updated on the progress of this project and are looking forward to celebrating with you in the future!
